This is the last bit of post-processing for the Garden Scene painting posted here... [link] ...which is the last segment of the @CameliaGirls OP sequence as can be previewed here: [link]
The scene features Kana and Miharu sleeping peacefully over a blanket under the shade of a tree. This image, along with the Beach Scenes and the Character Intros, was originally outsourced to save on time -- but due to a number of reasons, I eventually had to pull the commission and retake this painting under my wing.
Although primarily worked on in MyPaint, this last segment was completed in GIMP due to the requirement for image editing and light rendering capabilities. The goals were three fold...
---
1) enhance the tree shading over Miharu and Kana.
2) increase the overall brightness and contrast of the image at large to blend better with the Anime setting while still retaining some faux photo-realistic elements. This will likely be the doctrine for the revised watercolour backgrounds from now on.
3) Add a brilliant light source for greater picture warmth -- while perfectly possible to do this in MyPaint, it's easier to accomplish this with GIMP's Gradient Flare filter.
---
This final post-processing now concludes work on this image. While not perfect, it's good enough for the OP sequence it's intended for (it will require this panoramic shot above, plus a close-up shot for a brief 2 second pan). The end of the OP sequence is now looking closer than ever.
Should I say it again? THIS IS AMAZING!!!! The detail is GREAT, BIG reso, and so greeeny I feel calm and got into this beauty scene... =w= you doing GREAT JOB, dear favfavfavfavfavfavfavfavfavfavfavfavfavfavfav
Holy shit-burgers C-kun, this is amazing! O8 The final product surely does not disappoint, good job! The colors alone are fantastic, not to mention the lighting effect and all… very, very well done! This version is much brighter and friendlier than the original, too, which I think fits better with the rest of the OP.
fufu! Thank you Echo-san. ^__^ Well this definitely was the longest painting I've ever worked with before, so happy the results didn't disappoint y'all. ^-^
And yeah, that was disaster-averted with the colours -- I was so engrossed painting the scene based on how it should look naturally, I kinda forgot it had to be bright and cheery. ^__^;
Ohh, really? Well it shows, you really but a lot of effort into this. C:
Ahaha, so I read… I completely understand, though, I've done similar things myself. -w- You get carried away with something and realize you've gone entirely off the mark… like writing essays… /should be writing on OTL/ But it looks nice, you saved this painting indeed. :3

Sorry it took so long to download (although that just means you need Speedy...]
Now then, time to see when to finish the OP...
You will do a tutorial teaching us mere mortals the secret behind dappled tree-shading someday, won't you? D:
But the only real secret is "improv".
Didn't really now how they do it in anime studios, but to improvise a solution, I...
------
1) made a separate layer on top of the girls
2) grabbed a nice foliage brush which has a lot of gaps and just draw the hell over it using black paint
3) used the same foliage brush with the eraser, and cut up places that didn't have enough holes in them e.g., their face)
4) reduced the opacity of the layer to about half
5) changed the blending mode to something that softens up the shading while colourizing it a bit (Grain Merge in this case)
------
And voila! You get something that's kinda-sorta like tree-shading.
The final product surely does not disappoint, good job! The colors alone are fantastic, not to mention the lighting effect and all… very, very well done!

No can wait for the finished OPPPPPPPP ;w;
