Miharu Garden Sketch by C-quel Miharu Garden Sketch by C-quel
It may not look it, but during the biggest part of the last decade I've never actually hand-drawn anything. 95% of all my artwork posted to date is vector-based created in Inkscape, which is really more akin to building or sculpting rather than drawing or painting. And my very early sketches, as well as my dismal forays into GIMP graphics tablet "half-drawings", usually make me gag and rush back to the comfort of pure vector-drawn works.

Not to say I don't enjoy the precision work of vector-based drawings, but knowing how good I used to be for illustrations requiring mandatory randomness and speed (such as natural backgrounds), it felt suffocating to go years without the joy of splashing paint on paper, while still retaining the modern digital luxury of the "Undo" button to quench my perfectionist leanings. A graphics tablet simply wouldn't cut it -- given my main problem has always been bad hand-eye coordination, the disconnect between screen and hand would just add more fuel to the fire. ><

And I have long since advocated that a tablet would save my day, given it would marry the best of both worlds. However, four years passed since the prediction, and the only thing that has emerged in this sector is the shocking extinction of the stylus and the growing use of finger-based touchscreens.

If I did not act fast, I figured my last window of opportunity to break my art block siege would close... forever... ^^;

And so act I did, and after 10 years (and despite the small expense) I've never felt happier! :D

With a proper monitor-based graphics tablet, I have finally proved to myself that not only do I still have it in me to "hand-paint", but that I'm also better, faster, more confident, and above all happier to do so digitally. And what should have been 1-hour speedpaint to test out its capabilities, turned into a slow-brewed labour of love -- a few minutes each day over the course of the last 8 days.

Still rather speed-paintish in quality, since I was strict about using ONLY a true paint program (with minor exceptions), and so embraced imperfections in order to help make the details a little more natural. So this is certainly my most ambitious drawing to date given I literally flung myself into the chaos of the digital-paint world completely unprepared, and survived to tell the tale. :)

====================

As for the picture itself, we have the lovely Miharu from our visual novel, @CameliaGirls, sitting in a garden while showcasing one of her latest sketch.

Many thanks as usual to the equally-lovely :iconhayashinomura: for creating Miharu and doing Kana-chan's sketch as well. :)

Very simple premise, but all the detail is almost entirely hand-crafted, which makes me one happy (and now very motivated) piggy. ^___^v

================

Created in Kubuntu 10.04, on a Wacom Cintiq 12WX, using:

92% MyPaint (first time using this, and I love it)

6% GIMP (for the coloured lines and some ORA layer repositioning

2% Inkscape (to fix an early screw-up) ^^;

Ah, the old 21inch Wacom is a monster... Thank goodness I never thought to buy that one, as it was uber-expensive, and my smaller 12UX doesn't really get used much anymore anyway. ^^;

Oh, they're small, light, practical, plug-and-play, work nicely in Mac, Linux and Windows. I actually have one with me which I use for quick drawing that doesn't require such a big, bulky device like the Cintiq. >.<

I may even sell the Cintiq and stick with the Bamboo, especially since Android tablets will one day be the Cintiq's of the future (and for a LOT cheaper and more portable). :3

hehe, well true it is a little colourful although doesn't hold a candle to the latest garden pic. ^^

[btw, that garden is actually the same as the one up above, it's just from a different angle] ^^

Nice use of color and texture throughout. The anime style combined with creative use of brush techniques make it poster worthy. Second to the sketchpad in her hand, the thing that really stands out most to me is the cotton candy-ish look to the flowers. Very creative ;-)

Well MyPaint should get most of the credit, since it let me (a complete painting novice) get started almost immediately with some very nice brushes. The texturing came later as I explored more of Mypaint's wonderful brush sets, and grew to adore the ones that added gritty patterns like that. ^^

[so if Kolibri was a celebration of colours, Miharu was a celebration of textures] ^^
The sketchpad, though, was not mine -- that was collaged in from one of my partner :iconhayashinomura:'s drawings:

You just reminded me that I really need to put MyPaint through a thorough test. I downloaded it about a month ago and only really tested its nice charcoal brush. It's a very impressive program :-)

Yeah, I got that thingie about a month ago, although honestly haven't used it as much sense. Currently working on the OP video sequence for the game, which is far less drawing than it is doing video editing and parsing Renpy code. The Cintiq is great for that too,... but only as a second monitor, lol. :)

It must feel great finishing such an awesome and refined hand-made drawing, and your first completed one in so many years! Congratulations! :D

Miharu-chan looks soooo cute! I really like how you drew her hair and eyes- so detailed! And the background looks like something right out of a traditional painting! :)

Are finger-based touchscreens really that common these days?! I didn't think anyone would like drawing on those touchscreens! From personal experience, I've make quick doodles on some paint programs on my iPod Touch. Maybe it's just the small size, but it's very hard to get impressive results from it.

Thank you x2, Katt-chama! ^____^

Indeed it was quite invigorating, and very reassuring too. I was at a bit of a point of despair, thinking I could never draw again (since I couldn't eek out any good ideas for weeks).

But once the Cintiq arrived, I just drew drew drew till this came about. So at least I still got the ol' spark. ^____^

Now I've not been able to reproduce this yet because right now I'm really pushing to finish the OP sequence. But I did at least start my next image, which will be done in Inkscape (I want to see how well it handles with a cintiq) ^^

=====

Indeed the acrylic-style brushes available in MyPaint are incredible. Hopefully you can try them out yourself, since I don't know whether there is a MyPaint DMG yet. :)

=====

And lol, well the iPhone, iPad and Android devices are selling like hotcakes, so I would definitely say finger-based touchscreens are popular, and will be for a long time (maybe forever, lol). ^^
But agreed, they're suboptimal for drawing because they require a minimum "drawing" surface. If you had needle-thin fingers, for example, it would not register your touches because they're specifically looking for "human" finger touches. :)

That's why all the drawing styluses available for iPhone/Android are super thick and clunky, hence the not so impressive results. :(

Here's hoping an artist-friendly device will come out some day, so it won't be as expensive for would-be artists as a Wacom Cintiq. ^^;

Is it just me, or does Miharu totally remind one of Nagisa (from Clannad) in this pic?

Either way, I do love the very "hand-painted" feel. It's quite different from the cel-shaded-like works you normally do.

lol, well that would certainly be a first, since all of Haya-chan's characters generally look like CLAMP characters (or maybe because of my KEY/KyoAni bent, she looks like that). :D

Well the cockroach antennas are certainly there and definitely the color, although the hair is ultimately a little too long to be truly Nagisa-like. ^.^

And thank you. :D
It did take much longer than my cel-shaded stuff, but as long as the drawing process felt rather natural, I definitely had much fun doing this. ^-^

(couldn't say the same back when using I was using a regular graphics tablet) ^^'
